Questions people actually ask
How does the scanning actually work?
When you press the hotkey, the extension captures the visible area of the tab you're on and hands that image to an OCR engine compiled to WebAssembly that runs inside your browser. The text is extracted on your own machine.
The screenshot is never uploaded, never stored, and never sent to any server — ours or anyone else's. There is no network call in the recognition path at all, on any plan.
Once the text has been extracted on your machine, that text is sent to our server and on to our AI provider to be answered. So a picture of your screen never leaves your computer; the words that were on it do.
That distinction is the whole point. Photo-based apps upload the image itself — your desk, your handwriting, whatever else was in frame. We only ever transmit the characters you selected.
Why is Answr cheaper than the photo-scanning apps?
Because we don't pay per scan. Phone-based scanners send every photo to a commercial vision API, and those bill per request. That cost scales with how much you use the app, which is why those products come with scan credits, monthly caps, or prices that creep upward.
Answr's recognition runs on hardware you already own. That is the expensive half of a photo-scanning app — every image they process is a paid vision API call — and for us it costs nothing at all.
We still pay to have the extracted text answered, which is why Pro includes 20 scans a day rather than pretending the number is infinite. But we are not paying twice, so the price does not have to carry it.
How does the $1.49 first week work, and how do I cancel?
Premium starts with an introductory week for $1.49. That $1.49 is charged when you sign up — it is not a free trial. You get the full Premium plan for 7 days, and on day 8 the regular $12.99/month begins. Cancel before day 8 and you are never charged the $12.99; the $1.49 itself is not refunded once the week has started.
To cancel, go to the support page, paste your license key, and click Manage or cancel. That opens Stripe's billing portal where you can cancel, update your card, or check exactly when your next payment is due.
Cancelling stops all future charges immediately. Your license stays active through the end of the period you've already paid for, then the extension locks itself at the next daily check.
Lifetime is a single payment — there's nothing to cancel and nothing that renews.
How do I reach a human on Premium?
Direct email support is included with Premium and Lifetime. Head to the support page, paste your license key, and the team's email address is revealed once the key is verified as active.
We gate the address rather than publishing it so that paid customers aren't queued behind everyone else. Pro users have the full self-serve troubleshooting guide and can upgrade at any time.
How many scans do I actually get?
Pro includes 20 scans a day, resetting 24 hours after your first one. The extension shows how many you have left, so the last one is never a surprise, and you can upgrade at any time.
Premium and Lifetime have no allowance and no counter. Nothing runs down and you will not be asked to upgrade. There is automated abuse protection to stop scripted use and shared credentials, set far above what anyone reaches through ordinary study — details in our terms.
Every answered scan counts the same, whatever the subject. Reading your screen is free; having the text answered is what we pay for.
Which browsers and sites does it work on?
Answr is a Chrome extension (Manifest V3) and works in Chrome and other
Chromium-based browsers like Edge, Brave, and Opera. It can read anything
rendered in a normal http:// or https:// tab.
Chrome itself blocks extensions from capturing browser-internal pages such
as chrome://settings and the Chrome Web Store — that's a
browser security rule, not a limitation we can lift.
Can I use one license on more than one computer?
One at a time. A license works on a single device, and you can move it between your own machines whenever you like — activate the key on the new one and it comes with you.
To move it cleanly, sign out in the extension on the machine you are leaving; that frees it immediately and costs you nothing. If you can't get back to that machine — it was lost, sold, or reset — the license releases itself automatically after seven days without use. Moving between devices repeatedly in a short period is limited, which is what stops one key being passed around a group.
If you need Answr on two machines at once, buy a second license.
